Barbour County Alabama Poorhouse
The "Poor House" was located on Poor House Rd. in Clayton, Al.on Co.Rd.55. A gas tank storage is now on the site where the tenant houses use to sit, two of them were sold, there were approx.4/5 of them, one being sold to Rozell Blakey. One was moved next to the County Shop , I am told this one was the Keepers house, located on County Shop Road., the other being moved down the road from the original place. Just as the pavement ends on 55 on the left, it is now in very bad shape, see photo on the next page. According to Mr. Marshall Williams of Clayton, which was the County Commissioner in Clayton for years stated that the Overseers house was to the left what is now woods, this house was moved to the County Shop on County Shop Rd. and painted green to be used as an office, since then they have built a new office, although it is still in use. Across the road from the original "Poor House" property was the TB Clinic, which no longer stands. The Poorhouse was in existance for we know over 90 years. There are several cemeteries on this road, although the one that is suppose to be the Poorhouse cemetery is located in the woods behind the original spot the Poorhouse was located, there are no longer gravemarkers, but several of the elders in Clayton have said that it is the original "Poorhouse" cemetery. "John Seay was my great grandfather and was the overseer during parts of the '40s and 50s. "
Below are the census' I have gathered on the Keepers, their family and the paupers of the Poorhouse from various resources. In the 1920 census the Poorhouse was called "The Alms House."
